HIDAKA KOMBU & SHIRAKABA OIL IN SERUM
HIDAKA KOMBU & SHIRAKABA OIL IN SERUM
- Available starting August 6
A light, fluid oil-in-serum that helps minimise the appearance of pores
and leaves skin feeling smooth
A two-phase serum that combines the benefits of oil and lotion in one.
The upper layer brings together a highly moisturising oil-extracted Hidaka Kombu extract and Kalahari melon oil, whilst the lower layer is formulated with birch sap harvested from birch trees, distilled water drawn from fresh young birch leaves, and a water-extracted Hidaka Kombu extract. The birch sap — which can be collected only during a brief window before the snow melts, just once a year — together with distilled water from the fresh young leaves and the concentrated essence of Hidaka kombu from the sea, are all held within a single bottle.
In summer, skin can feel oily from sweat and sebum, making dryness seem unlikely — yet the skin's inner layers are often more parched than we realise. Wiping away sweat also removes the skin's natural oils and moisture, which is why it matters to replenish and maintain the skin's balance of water and oil.
This serum helps to restore moisture to skin that has become dry, balance its water and oil levels, and encourage a firmer, more luminous-looking complexion. Light and non-sticky — a welcome companion for summer skin.
A fresh, hydrating texture — comfortable to use even through the heat of summer
We set out to create the freshest and fluid texture of any SHIRO oil-in-serum. It delivers lasting moisture whilst absorbing into skin into the skin, as though melting gently beneath the surface.
Like a quiet guardian for your skin through the demands of summer.
Kalahari melon oil, paired with two key ingredients
We use Kalahari melon oil — a beloved ingredient across SHIRO's oil products. It absorbs quickly, without the heaviness typical of oils.
The scent is an original blend of fresh Yuzu and a gently sweet woody essential oil. The soft richness of kombu, the crispness of birch, and a pleasing fragrance come together to make your everyday skincare something to look forward to.
INGREDIENTS

Hidaka Kombu — Hiroo, Hokkaido (e-Combu)
Hidaka Kombu is widely used as a cooking and dashi kombu. It is rich in vitamins and minerals, and is said to contain higher levels of vitamin A and B vitamins (B1, B2, and folate) — nutrients that support healthy-looking skin — compared to Gagome Kombu. Its natural thickening component, fucoidan, is known for its moisture-retaining properties, helping to maintain hydration and protect skin from dryness. At SHIRO, we use kombu that, despite being highly nutritious, receives a low market grade and cannot be sold at a fair price. Rather than let it go to waste, we put it to good use in our products.

Birch (Shirakaba)—Aibetsu / Horokanai / Etanbetsu , Hokkaido
Sensitive to heat and dryness, birch trees thrive in cold climates and grow widely across Hokkaido in Japan. Resilient by nature, they are among the first to take root and grow, even on barren ground, drawing nutrients from the soil before other plants can. The sap collected before the snow melts — drawn up to nourish the tree's first young leaves of spring — is known as the 'water of life'. The bark and young leaves are also rich in vitamin C, flavonoids (a type of polyphenol), and tannins, which are said to help address a range of skin concerns.
